The Hydrology Commission of the Supreme Council of Meteorology* held its spring session on the 1Oth of May 2016 at École des Ponts ParisTech. On this occasion, the Commission – which brings together Météo France, and most of the French hydrology practitioners and researchers – focused its discussions on radar hydrology, monitoring and forecasting of Mediterranean river floods.
Daniel Schertzer presented to the Commission the radar (X-band and dual polarization) of the Ecole des Ponts ParisTech and the international programs (Raingain, Blue Green Dream, TOMACS and CASA) where the Hydrology Meteorology and Complexity (HM&Co) Research Unit. This information was completed with a discussion on possible impacts that radar technology may have on the France radar mosaic, especially in large urban areas and mountainous areas.
(*) The Supreme Council of Meteorology is a consultative body gathering Météo-France and its public and private users. It was created with the Decree No. 91-1209 of the 29th November 1991, which specifies its role, membership, and functioning.The Supreme Council of Meteorology is in charge of :
- Formulating requests or recommendations;
- Proposing the means to be implemented in order to meet the new estimated needs;
- Making proposals regarding the origin of the corresponding funds;
- Following the progress of the implemented actions
The Council members are representatives of ministries, representatives of organizations and of individuals, that use meteorological information, or are interested in the development of meteorological science, or can cooperate with Météo-France on multidisciplinary projects.
