Empirical estimation: Phytoplankton distribution

In marine systems, the change in light and nutrient availability that influences community composition is drived by the turbulence. The variation of biological variable can be defined using advection-diffusion equation, thinks to the dimensional analysis we can defined a flux which is related to the measured quantities.

(a): Micro-structure of different data field, (b) the corresponding structure function scaling exponent : velocity (thick line), fluorescence (open circle), conductivity (dotted line)

The curvature of the structure function scaling exponent provides information about the intermittency of the field, we can observe that the fluorescence is more intermittent than velocity, but less intermittent than conductivity.
