Urban flooding

Urban flooding is due to a lack of drainage in an urban area. Because of the impervious area, there is little open soil that can be used for infiltration and water storage. Nearly all the precipitation needs to be transfer to surface water or the sewage system. High intensity rainfall can cause flooding when the city sewage system and draining canals do not have the necessary capacity to drain away the amounts of rain (http://www.floodsite.net/).

Sewage network saturation can cause 2 kinds of problems:

  • Flooding: an area is inundated with several centimetres of water (top)

  • Combined Sewage Overflow (CSO): water is overflowed directly to water bodies when the volume exceeds the capacity of the sewer system (bottom)
