Digital Introductory Course on Complex Systems in Environment
Unit, the Digital University of Engineering and Technology
Unit is one of the national Thematic Digital Universities (UNT) created at the initiative of
'Grande Ecoles', Universities and the Ministry of Higher Education to share the existing digital
documents, the Tools, the experience, and co-pilot Hydrologie-meteorologie-complexite based on
ICT’s (Information and Communication Technologies) for Education.
Complex Systems in Environmental Engineering and Technologies
Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, AgroParisTech, INRIA (Institut National de la Recherche en
Informatique et Automatisme), ISC-PIF (Institut des Systèmes Complexes Paris-Île de France,
Telecom ParisTech, U. Pierre & Marie Curie are the partners of this Unit project that aims to
develop an introductory e-course to complex systems, based on on their existing pedagogical
materials and filling up the present gaps.
This e-course with its different variants will address a large readership spectrum,
from undergraduate students to engineers and scientists. It is built around a main trunk,
whose chapters introduce the general methodological Tools and whose branches correspond to
tutorials. In the mid-term, these branches can generate specialized courses.
The addressed topic will include: complexity and complex systems definitions, the scale
problem, dynamical approaches, multiscale analyses and simulations, complex networks, extremes
and criticality, resilience, robustness and sustainability. The examples of applications will
range from microwave propagations in urban areas, modeling of flows in cities to robotic
transports, smart grids and pervasive sensors.
